HOUSING PROJECTS

THE RETROFITTING PROJECT

The trust has been involved in Retrofitting houses in the Far North since 1999. We initially started our project with 300 houses, funded by EECA & TPK and then another 100 funded by Housing NZ. This has been a very successful project thus far, and the crew has work confirmed for another 2 years.

What is retrofitting? Retrofitting involves installing ceiling insulation, underfloor sisaltion paper, underfloor polythene, Hot water cylinder wrap, draught stopping around doors and windows, fitting low flow showerheads, and energy efficient light bulbs into homes.

EECA will part fund these measures and contributions are sought from other funders, in the North we have been working with Warmer Housing Whangarei and they have been able to secure some funding from the Tindall Foundation & EECA to do houses in Otangarei, and from the NECBOP Project & EECA to do houses in the Far North. Housing NZ is retrofitting all its housing stock within the next few years so there is also more work on Housing NZ Northland stock.

THE NECBOP PROJECT

Is funded by Housing NZ it stands for Northland East Coast Bay Of Plenty, so named because of the extreme levels of poor or substandard housing in those areas. The risks of loss of life were recognised by the Government and a pilot project was begun in those areas to assist whanau to repair their homes, this was done through the provision of Housing NZ Loans.

The project here in Moerewa has seen one of our local Kuia getting into a completely new house, and 7 other houses benefit from reroofs, rewiring and replumbing there homes. This is an awesome project and we are appreciative of all the efforts everyone is putting in to make this work.
