Brief
HIKTT
has already begun initiatives for social development in Moerewa. These
initiatives have been very successful, but have been limited in scope
by lack of capital. What emerged late 2001 was the need for skilled
proffessional people to assist in the facilitation and extension of
the design process as part of the long term development planning undertaken
by the whanau in Moerewa. This was not only a proposal to change the
visual character of the town but to integrate the design and development
proposals with a social and economic strategy, to ensure their ongoing
viability and to connect them to the regional development strategies
that address employment, education & social welfare.
The
primary focus is to inject life into the local economy with the benefits
of employment for local people, with the consequent postive social spin
offs. The idea is very much a "from the ground up" approach
and has already had significant success, with the setting up of "Te
Puna I Keteriki, A Contemporary Maori Experience" hosting a
high quality cafe, and a number of associated retail outlets for the
sale of Maori crafts and clothing, that are designed and manufactured
locally. These have already attracted a large amount of media publicity
and are operating successfully. These initiatives have given the town
a much needed boost to its self esteem.
It
is now important to build upon these successful ventures, which have
been developed at the grass roots level. what is needed to extend these
programmes and to develop new proposals that build upon the gains that
have already been made. Below
are proposed drawings of what local people felt they would like their
town to look like:
